About AddonSpot

AddonSpot exists for a simple reason: the small tools we all reach for online are often buried under signup walls, popups, and clutter. A word counter should just count words. A name generator should just generate names — instantly, on any device, without an account. So that’s what gets built here.

Who’s behind AddonSpot

Hi — I’m Zain, a computer science student and the person who builds and maintains AddonSpot.

This site started the way a lot of side projects do: out of irritation. I needed to count the words in an assignment, and the first three results wanted an account before they would tell me a number. The fourth covered half the screen in ads. It was a problem that a first-year student could solve in an afternoon — so I did, and then I kept going.

Studying computer science shapes how these tools get built more than it shapes what they do. Almost everything here runs entirely in your browser, in JavaScript, with no server round-trip. That isn’t a marketing decision, it’s an engineering one: a word counter has no legitimate reason to send your essay to someone else’s computer, and an age calculator doesn’t need your date of birth on a database. If the maths can happen on your device, it should. That single principle explains most of the design choices on this site.

It also means I care more than most people would about the parts nobody notices. Whether the age calculator borrows the correct number of days from the preceding month. Whether the word counter splits on the same rule your university’s submission system uses. Whether a generated gamertag actually fits inside Xbox’s twelve-character limit before you fall in love with it. Getting those details right is the entire job — a tool that is almost correct is worse than no tool at all, because you trust it.

AddonSpot is a one-person project, written and maintained alongside coursework. That has an upside and a downside. The upside is that there is no roadmap dictated by anyone else, no growth targets, and nothing gets added because it might convert well. The downside is that I build in the gaps between deadlines, so new tools arrive when they arrive.

What’s here

AddonSpot is a growing collection of free, browser-based tools, currently spanning four families:

Alongside the tools, the guides and blog covers browser extensions worth knowing about and practical naming advice — like our brand name checklist and how to pick a gamertag that isn’t already taken. You can see everything in one place on the homepage.

What this site believes

How the tools are built

Every generator and calculator is plain client-side JavaScript. There is no account system, no analytics on your input, and no server that receives what you type. Load a page once and the tool keeps working even if your connection drops.

Where a tool depends on an outside rule — a platform’s character limit, a calendar convention, a trademark process — that rule gets checked against the primary source rather than against whatever other sites claim, and the page links out to it so you can verify the same thing yourself. Where a number is genuinely an approximation, the page says so plainly instead of implying more precision than exists.

Where this is headed

Tools get added based on what people actually ask for. If there’s something you wish existed here, tell me on the Suggest a Tool page — it’s the single biggest driver of what gets built next, and a specific description of the job you need done is worth far more than a tool name.

Questions, feedback, or a correction? The contact page reaches me directly, and I read everything. Corrections are especially welcome — if a tool gives you a result you think is wrong, I would genuinely rather know. Common questions are already answered in the FAQ.
